Carpet Tile
Why bury the lead?
The product we’re talking about is carpet tile. Believe it or not, carpet tiles have been in use since the mid-nineteenth century and were first sold by a small Dutch carpeting company outside of Amsterdam. The idea behind the invention of carpet tile was to design a product that would have the same functions as a full sized carpet, but eliminate the waste that occurs from cutting and trimming to fit certain spaces.
Carpet tile would continue to gain popularity throughout Europe, especially in urban areas in which many people lived in small apartments and did not have enough space for a full-sized rug. It proved popular in the commercial sector as well and many businesses made the switch to carpet tile because of its remarkable durability.
Uses and Advantages
Now that you know a little bit about the history of carpet tile, lets dive into what sets it apart from every other flooring product on the market.
As mentioned above, carpet tile is an extremely durable, heavy duty product. Not only is it resistant to tearing, but it is entirely waterproof. In fact, carpet tile is considered the best wearing carpet on the market, which means that you can put them through lots of abuse and they will remain in pristine condition.
Unlike other forms of tile, carpet tile does not use cement or high-powered glues in order to remain solidly positioned on the floor. Instead, carpet tile uses a pressure sensitive adhesive that never fully hardens. This allows each tile to remain easily autonomous so that they can be individually moved or replaced. There are four points of adhesion at each corner of the tile. Once you’ve peeled back the protective coverings to expose the adhesive, you simply position the tile as desired, place it flat on the floor and apply pressure. You’ll notice right away that the tile remains solidly in place.
The solid vinyl backing underneath each carpet tile is designed to remain bonded to the fabric on the top of the tile. Even with a high volume of daily traffic and movement back and forth of heavy machinery, the vinyl backing will not separate, allowing carpet tile to maintain the seamless appearance of traditional carpeting.
Although many commercial carpet tiles are only available with minimal color options, residential carpet tiles are available in a wide array of patterns and designs and can add quite a bit of character to your home. In order to make life even simpler, each carpet tile is marked with arrows which are visible on the vinyl backing. These arrows allow you to easily identify where to point the tile in order to execute the pattern correctly.
In addition to being highly durable, versatile and user friendly, carpet tile is also surprisingly affordable. Priced anywhere from $1.50 – $3.00 per square foot, carpet tile provides a great option for anyone looking to secure great looking carpeting at a low price with the option to remove or replace at any time.
